Archival Inkjet Print, 27" x 40" x 2"
Shipbuilders is a series of digital composites generated to suggest a narrative built on the legacies of my grandfathers. Archival photographs are scanned, dissected and collaged with the plans of shrimp boats and WWII ships, two fields that my grandparents worked in. Integrated into to images are elements that indicate distress and neglect. Documents, maps and historical records further the layers of memory, time and the rituals of trade and labor. The reverence of the larger than life reproductions of cabinet cards transcend the vernacular intentions of the original images from an object of everyday passage into an uncovered relic, an artifact to be looked upon with curious, disengaged recognition.
