Poe is the foundation of all horror in the United States. In this painting, I am thinking of Poe's horror as the result of the psychic toll brought about by the bloody takeover of this country from the native peoples. Call it guilt, call it a curse- just think of the many horror movies that begin on the plot of an ancient Indian burial ground. Also, contemplate the fact that the native american plant poison ivy is both an incredible restorer of damaged ecosystems, and also a continual annoyance to those that did the damage...
