Virulent Cavity, 2011
acrylic, silkscreen, sintra, wood, 24" x 24" x 20"
This piece is one in an ongoing group of pieces exploring the idea of the oculus, meaning an open portal or eye. In these pieces, the oculus is a permeable hole, allowing passage through, but there is also a radiance of outward looking, or surveying.
Virulent Cavity is a malignant form- a form that is threatening to grow rapidly and dangerously. It is a land mine, a technological weapon, and a sophisticated toy. Though the piece is fairly modest in size, it references megastructures, a product of my fascination with the construction of the Large Hadron Collider.
