My name is David Andrew Frey. I created culturehall to serve emerging and professional artists as well as the public who love to experience art.
The kernel of what became culturehall started in 1999 while on break from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The original incarnation, Sam891.com, was intended to be a repository of contemporary American art and non-art objects presented by members of the site. I worked on that version of the site and its surrounding concepts during the rest of my graduate studies. Sam891.com was never intended to be a truly functioning site, but a conduit for examining what separated art from the rest of our contemporary popular culture.
In 2000 my wife and I moved from Chicago to Washington, DC. I was still fascinated by the idea of artists creating online content and decided to pursue the project in a new form as a business. The word Sam891 was a username that was automatically generated by Yahoo! and this word didn't really suit what the ideas had now become. After 4 very generous cups of coffee at Tryst in Adams Morgan the name culturehall was born. Also during this time I made the decision to suspend my art making to focus solely on bringing culturehall to life.
During the next few years we bounced back and forth between New York and Washington where I continued to work in web publishing until 2006 when I left my job to launch culturehall.
The site you are visiting now is the culmination of research, design and development conducted over the past two years. I hope you find culturehall useful and would be interested in your thoughts on how to make culturehall serve you better.

Our mission is to bring people together who love art. Making it easy for artists to display their art online. And making it simple to find contemporary visual art and artists from around the world.
While viewing work is open to the public, presenting work is available through a short application process. We require 3 image samples of your art and a wee bit of information about yourself. Exhibiting members receive 50MB of online storage to present their works through images, QuickTime video and MP3 audio. Members can also post their biography (a CV with images, videos and audio) share their links, give and receive critiques and more.
